SLS

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) is a detergent found in many bath products, shower gels, shampoos and toothpastes. It is a popular ingredient as it is relatively cheap and produces a lot of foam and bubbles. SLS started off (and is still used) as a garage floor cleaner and degreaser. When used on the skin this rather harsh detergent strips off the top layer of moisture and can leave the skin dry and irritated and aggravate those with eczema and sensitive skins. SLS is used as an irritant when experiments are run to test different healing agents. As the molecules in SLS are so small they may pass through the skin and into the underlying tissues and organs. Trials at the University of Georgia Medical College found that SLS penetrated and lodged itself in the eyes, heart, brain, lungs and liver. Whilst it is still unknown what the overall effect of this may be we have chosen not to include this ingredient in any of our products.

Parabens

Parabens are used widely in the cosmetic industries as an undoubtably effective preservative with both antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Although Parabens are used in minute quantities it appears that they cannot be broken down by the body, it is questionable whether they therefore accumulate, and if so, what the long term effects could be. In the last few years researchers found that parabens were present in samples of breast tumours. There has been no scientific evidence  to link parabens to any form of cancer but as we feel this is still an area of uncertainty we have not included them in our products.
